At DUSK, we believe food can create meaningful impact beyond the plate. This season, we are proud to introduce a collaboration with the Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch (AWSS) and Clay Café Paarl — an initiative inspired by Executive Chef Callan Austin’s adoption of his dog, Teddy, from AWSS.
A Man’s Best Friend
After discovering Clay Café’s paint-your-own dog bowls, we envisioned a dish that could raise awareness for AWSS in a playful yet purposeful way. Our team visited the shelter to meet the animals and learn more about the organisation’s work, and each bowl used in the restaurant now carries the name of a dog we met.
The dish, “A Man’s Best Friend,” appears on both our Summer tasting menus. Crafted with nostalgia and humour, it celebrates the joy that dogs bring into our lives while honouring DUSK’s culinary philosophy. We encourage our guests to support AWSS and the vital work they do. About AWSS
The Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch (AWSS) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the welfare of animals in the Stellenbosch community. AWSS recognises all animals as sentient beings with the right to a good quality life and is involved in all aspects of animal welfare — from sheltering and adoption to sterilisation, vaccination, veterinary care, and cruelty prevention.
Guided by its motto, “Together we make a difference,” the organisation cares for hundreds of dogs and cats each year, reuniting lost pets with their owners, rehabilitating animals in need, and finding loving homes for those ready to be adopted. To date, AWSS has helped over 1,180 animals find new homes and provided vaccinations, sterilisations, and veterinary care to thousands more in the community it serves.
